The plantation owner William Ludwell Lee freed the people he had enslaved at his death and left them land, and from 1803 to 1850 families farmed it, built churches and raised children there — one of the earliest documented free Black communities in the country. Three of their cabins have been reconstructed a short walk from the picnic tables, with markers and exhibits alongside. Nothing is roped off from the recreation; the trail simply runs through it.
