Reynard's Cave

A limestone arch in Dovedale with a cave hiding behind it

Reynard's Cave

The arch goes first — a limestone span above Dovedale wide enough to walk under, framing the valley like a doorway — and the cave sits behind it, small enough to miss entirely. Excavations turned up coins and pottery left by Neolithic, Roman and medieval people sheltering here, and in 2013, a brown bear’s tooth that archaeologists could not account for. Bats roost in it over winter.
