The Prince of the Lilies Fresco

The striding prince in the lily crown is on postcards, book covers and museum posters worldwide, and almost none of him survived. Arthur Evans’s restorer Émile Gilliéron took a torso, a crown and loose body fragments excavated at Knossos and combined them into one figure, filling the gaps with guesswork and plaster. Evans himself first read them as no less than three figures before talking himself out of it, and scholars since have argued the lily crown belongs to a priestess or a sphinx rather than to this torso.
