An architect's archive of the human urge to get off the ground

On Verticality

Architect Christopher James Botham has spent years collecting evidence for one question: why do humans need to escape the surface of the earth? The answers come as pictures with short essays, filed under architecture, flight and mountains. There is a c. 1900 proposal to wrap a “Colossal Hotel” around the base of the Eiffel Tower, a 1904 Gothic tower of 167 metres meant for Westminster, flying machines from a ninth-century tower leap to 1908, and Robert Mills’s far more elaborate c. 1845 design for the Washington Monument.
