The attribution holds up. Isaac Asimov wrote it in Newsweek on January 21, 1980, in “A Cult of Ignorance”, and a February 1980 digest reprinted it under his name. Astronomy magazine’s 1982 interview with Robert Burnham Jr. paraphrases Asimov, and Tom Nichols uses the passage as the epigraph of The Death of Expertise in 2017, crediting Asimov.
