Lazareto de Menorca

A walled island built so nobody could touch anyone else

Lazareto de Menorca

A whole island in Mahón Harbour, walled into wedges so that plague, cholera and yellow fever arrivals could be held for weeks without ever crossing paths. High interior walls divide the complex into separate quarantine zones, each with its own hospital, chapel, garden, warehouse and quarters — a self-contained world designed backwards from a single rule. It survives almost intact, and you can walk through it.
