Nara Prison held inmates from 1908 until 2017, then reopened this June as a hotel with the Romanesque brick gate, the radiating cell blocks and the barred windows all left in place. Each of the 48 suites is a strand of nine, ten or eleven original cells knocked through, the deluxe rooms stretching eleven cells long, and guests get after-hours access to preserved Cell Block D through a private side door into the on-site museum. Rooms start around ¥147,000 a night.
