Francisco de Zurbarán’s 1634 canvas shows Heracles hauling the captured Erymanthian Boar over his shoulder — and when he actually delivered it alive, King Eurytheus was so unnerved that he hid inside a large bronze jar rather than come out. Albrecht Dürer painted the hero shooting the bronze-beaked Stymphalian birds in 1500; Gustave Moreau later painted the same birds, and separately the man-eating mares of Diomedes devouring their own owner.
