Wilson set herself a constraint no other English translator had kept: exactly as many lines as Homer, in iambic pentameter, in words a person would say out loud. The result opens “Tell me about a complicated man” and never slows down for its own grandeur. If the poem has previously felt like homework, this is the copy that fixes it — and it is a good-looking paperback to hand to someone.
