Edward Quin’s 1830 atlas tells world history as weather. Each of its 21 plates shows the same globe, with everywhere beyond a given civilisation’s knowledge rendered as a mass of roiling black cloud. Plate by plate, as centuries pass and geography accumulates, the cloud retreats and the lit ground spreads outward — by the final map, the sky over the whole world has cleared.
