Cinema Africa

Asmara's third-most-famous Art Deco cinema, which is why it still belongs to its street

Cinema Africa

Visitors photograph Cinema Impero and Roma; Africa sits off that circuit, and the consequence is that its ground-floor café is still an actual café — espresso, a football match on the television, a billiard table, neighbours arguing. Ask at the side entrance and you can look into the main hall, a grid of bare wooden retractable seats found nowhere else in Eritrea. One of the largest cinemas in the country, and the least visited.
