Glitchwear

Knit-to-order shirts and sweaters from glitch art you tune yourself

A model in a short-sleeved knit tee with a dense pattern of teal, pink, black and white blocks, speckles and stripes, a black jacket slipped off her shoulders against a grey studio backdrop.

Glitchwear lets you pick a glitch video or write a shader, corrupt it with sliders, and choose the yarns. Then it knits that exact design, once, for you.

The studio runs in the browser. You start from a live glitch video or your own GLSL shader, tune effects like distortion, scan lines and noise, and pick up to four yarn colors from a fixed palette. The design previews on a 3D garment in the yarn colors you chose. Custom pieces are knit on demand, and delivery takes 10 to 14 days.

The label is led by creative director Dan Moore, and its other collections run on the same pipeline: a Steamboat Willie shirt cut from the 1928 cartoon, now public domain, and a tartan studio whose plaid you can rescale.

The piece to look at is Kyle McDonald’s Binary Stacks. McDonald’s own site describes it as a translation of his Binary Stacks generative system into knitwear: one pixel becomes one stitch, and each garment is one of 1,024 designs picked at random, with its seed printed near the collar. The shop’s description calls the source a waterfall of stacked ones and zeros, reduced to four yarns. You can buy a ready-made piece or open the studio and roll your own.

Prices depend on the garment. At the time of writing, Binary Stacks shirts list at $67 and sweaters at $87; vests elsewhere in the shop are $58. Ready-made pieces are numbered one-offs, so once one sells it is gone. Returns, unworn and unwashed, are for store credit or an exchange for another size, which matters for a one-of-one item, and there is a sizing chart in inches for sweaters and shirts.

Honest limits: this is custom knitwear priced as such, the lookbook photo above shows a Glitchwear design rather than a Binary Stacks piece, and a knit grid is far coarser than the video it started as.
