Thirty-plus live shader looks for your whole screen, one keystroke away

A CRT shader look applied to an entire Mac desktop: a photo of a cat in someone's arms rendered inside a curved, vignetted monitor frame, with scanline texture across the whole screen including the menu bar.

One of 30-plus looks, drawn live over everything — menu bar included.

Glaze redraws your whole screen live through more than 30 shader looks — CRT scanlines, VHS grain, halftone comic dots, Pop Art — swapped with a single keystroke, no recording step and no separate viewer window. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs alike, and four looks are free forever; the rest of the library is one $9.99 unlock, not a subscription.

Technically, Glaze works by requesting the standard macOS Screen Recording permission, the same one any screen-reading utility needs, then draws its shader over the live capture with Metal at 30fps. The look just sits over the display, all the time, the way a filter sits over a camera lens rather than something you apply after the fact. A keystroke cycles or turns it off, and an optional Accessibility permission adds a CRT-styled cursor and a quit shortcut.

The delight is in how specific the looks get. CRT adds scanlines and a curved, vignetted frame like an old television tube; VHS layers grain and color bleed; Comic renders the screen in halftone dots; Pop Art posterizes it into flat color blocks. Four looks ship free forever and don’t require an account: Paper, Prank Mode, Game Boy (a green monochrome dither), and Color Correct, a colorblindness-correction filter the developer treats as an accessibility feature rather than a paywalled extra.

Two figures quoted around the web are already stale — “20+ looks” and “Apple Silicon only” both come from Glaze’s own social-share tags, which still read “CRT, VHS, Comic, Pop Art and 20+ more” and “macOS 14+, Apple Silicon,” copy the live page has outgrown. The page itself lists “30+ looks” and ships separate Apple Silicon (M1 or newer, macOS 14+) and Intel (macOS 12.3+) builds. Everything past the free four is a single $9.99 unlock covering all current and future looks plus per-look intensity controls, tied to one Mac you can move yourself. It isn’t sold through the App Store; the app is a direct DMG download from the developer’s GitHub releases, with purchases handled through Dodo Payments.

Screen Recording access is worth weighing before installing anything that asks for it — it’s the permission that lets an app see everything on your display. The developer’s answer is that nothing is uploaded or tracked, and the only network call Glaze makes is a license check when you activate Pro. Performance is otherwise light — about 50MB of memory — though the heaviest looks, CRT especially, can strain the GPU enough to be noticeable on older Intel Macs; the simpler looks stay smooth throughout.
