G-Shock’s plainest square, dressed as a banana at the exact moment it is best to eat. It costs $170, and the joke is carried all the way through.
The watch is a standard DW-5600 in yellow resin, with brown freckles printed on the strap and the strap’s tip darkened to finish the effect. The cream display surround keeps it from turning into a cartoon. Press the light and a banana graphic appears behind the time.
It comes in a tin and box styled around a made-up brand, BAIT Farms, and the mascot, a cartoon banana called “Shawty with Freckles”, appears throughout the packaging and artwork. BAIT added a small matching apparel capsule.
The name has a real reference inside it. Yamagata Prefecture is home to Yamagata Casio, described in the launch coverage as the “mother factory” of G-Shock, and the release copy reads the design as a banana at its sweetest point.
Underneath, nothing is novel, which is the point of a DW-5600: Gear Patrol lists 200-metre water resistance, a five-year battery, stopwatch, countdown timer and alarm.
It went on sale September 30 at BAIT Chapter stores and BAITme.com for $170. Coverage calls it limited, but nobody gives a production number, and BAIT’s listing still showed it in stock on October 7.
It is a loud watch, and only the strap is freckled; the case is plain yellow. But a banana that survives 200 metres underwater is a good thing to have on a wrist.
