Runbo Li’s résumé is buried inside a Halo 3 multiplayer map, and the only way to read it is to go and find it.
Finish the Story is a faithful reconstruction of the map, not the campaign: original Guardian geometry and Halo 3’s own assets, running on Three.js for lighting and movement. It opens on a recreation of Halo 3’s own main menu, Bungie mark and all, before dropping you onto the floating platforms and curved catwalks it’s built from. It works from a phone too — the keyboard-and-mouse controls (WASD, mouse look, TAB for a discovery log) get an on-screen touch overlay when there’s no keyboard to catch them.
Li cofounded Magic Hour, an AI video startup that went through Y Combinator in 2024, and the fourteen “memories” scattered across the map’s ledges and lifts are closer to a life than a job history: being the new kid at a new school, a garden his father grew outside a campus apartment, the LimeWire-sourced iPod that got him through middle school, a month traveling Europe by rail pass with no plan, a first job at Beaver Stadium and a second scooping ice cream at a creamery counter. One professional beat matches that scale — titled “IT WORKED,” it marks December 2022, when he got the first Magic Hour prototype running in a Google Colab notebook, eight months before one of its edits went viral. Find all fourteen and the game unlocks a “burning skull” — a nod to Halo’s own collectible skulls — plus a screenshot to prove it.
There is no way around the level to get any of this directly. The pause-menu discovery log only fills in as memories turn up — empty, it just promises your discoveries will be kept here — and the credits panel gives legal text, not biography. Anyone curious who built Magic Hour has to actually walk the map to find out. Whether that’s the most charming filter a portfolio has ever run, or a wall dressed up as level design, depends on the visitor’s patience and how much they liked Halo 3 in 2007.
The project is upfront about the ground it stands on: an in-game disclaimer states plainly that this is an unofficial, non-commercial fan project, that Halo and Guardian are Microsoft’s trademarks, and that nothing here is affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Microsoft, Xbox, Bungie, or 343 Industries.
