A statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin — plus a scale replica of his spiked, cannon-lined “turtle boat” — stands in the parking lot of a Korean day spa in suburban Chantilly. Yi’s turtle ships helped destroy Japan’s 16th-century invasion fleet; at the Battle of Noryang in 1598 he was fatally shot but ordered the wound kept secret from his sailors until victory was certain. The jimjilbang next door opened in 2021, giving the admiral an unlikely modern neighbor.
