The answer to “what if all the water vanished” is of course that everything dies, which is where a lesser thought experiment would stop. What If? spends its time on the instant instead: the moment the ocean is gone, every ship afloat is suddenly a very heavy object several metres above a valley floor, and the things that lived in the water are somewhere in mid-air too. Worth it for the sequencing alone.
