A hillside letter in Platteville, Wisconsin

World's Largest M

Above Platteville, Wisconsin, a limestone M climbs Platte Mound: 241 feet tall, 214 feet wide, its legs 25 feet across. Two engineering students stamped it into the snow as a prank in 1936; it was a hit, and the next year students laid it in 400 tons of limestone. It still gets fresh coats of whitewash, so it reads for miles.
