Spielberg shot the flight in 1981 with the kids pedalling north up White Oak Avenue, taking off just before Tulsa Street. The hundred-odd deodar cedars arching over the road were already a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, declared in 1966, and the tunnel they make is why the shot reads as escape rather than a bike ride. For the film’s fortieth anniversary the valley muralist Phillip Leonard painted the bicycles back into the sunset on a building at Los Alimos Street.
