Wheal — a small swelling on the skin, as from an insect bite, an allergic reaction, or a blow — is perhaps an alteration of wale, from Old English walu (ridge), with earliest documented use before 1390. It is the third in a week of words that look like misspellings: say it aloud and it is a wheel, but this one turns up after a mosquito.
