IDW’s 2015 collection gathers 160 pages of romance comics from the 1950s to the early ’70s, reprinted from publishers whose copyrights lapsed — Quality, Charlton, ACG — and drawn by a rotating bench of artists who also worked westerns, crime, and horror across the same decades. The stories played straight at the time and now read as camp: one panel has a woman convinced her boyfriend left her because he’s “mixed up with Communists.” Nobody involved meant it as a joke, which is exactly why it still lands as one.
