Wahpper: The World's Largest Catfish

A 40-foot fiberglass catfish on the Red River that looks like it is swimming when the spring floods come

Wahpper: The World's Largest Catfish

Wahpper stands 40 feet long, 12 feet tall, and weighs 5,000 pounds — a fiberglass channel catfish set on a stone-effect pedestal on the banks of the Red River in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Sculptor Dave Oswald, also responsible for New Salem’s dairy cow Salem Sue, built it in 1997 for about $12,000, and the town marked the unveiling with a community fish fry. Most springs, snowmelt lifts the river around its pedestal until Wahpper looks like it’s swimming.
