Three mules once pulled boats past Delphi at five or six miles an hour, on a canal that ran 468 miles from Toledo to Evansville. The park keeps a watered stretch of it, the towpath beside it, and an 1850s village where craftsmen work through canal season, mid-May to mid-September. The ending is the part worth standing there for: the canals carried the rails for the railroads that killed them, and the last boat through Delphi ran in 1874.
