In 2012 the owner of an Ottawa, Illinois repair shop towed a 2001 Volvo S80 onto a peninsula, then took an excavator to the peninsula until only a one-car island was left. The plan was a contest — guess how it got there — dropped when it became clear people would swim forty feet of water for a closer look. A second Volvo now sits half-sunk by the bank with VOLVO ISLAND OR BUST across the rear glass, and there are Beetles hanging in the trees.
