Jane McDevitt has scanned and posted more than 4,000 matchbox labels to Flickr, the bulk of them Eastern European and printed between the 1950s and 1980s — miniature, full-bleed graphic design in two or three flat colors, from a Polish zoo’s cartoon tiger to Soviet and Czechoslovak animal designs. The Cold War constraints show: cheap print runs, bold sans type, illustration doing all the work. Some designs are now sold as prints through her Matchbloc project.
