Venust — beautiful, graceful, elegant — comes from Latin venustus (charming, beautiful), kin to venus (love, charm) and to the goddess herself, with earliest documented use in 1513. It opens a week of words that look like misspellings: Venus with a stray t, as Anu Garg puts it, none the less beautiful for it. The art is Lorenzo Lotto’s Venus and Cupid (c. 1520s).
