For centuries, two Venetian factions — the shipbuilding Castellani in red and the fishing Nicolotti in black — fought battagliole sui ponti, staged brawls for control of the city’s bridges, sometimes drawing tens of thousands of spectators. Fists and cudgels were the sanctioned weapons of these guerre dei pugni, though stones and daggers crept in and men were sometimes killed.
