How Ancient Greek Warships Worked

A 3D animation that finally makes three tiers of oars make sense

How Ancient Greek Warships Worked

The trireme’s real problem is geometric: fit three banks of oars into one hull without the rowers fouling each other’s strokes. Prose descriptions never quite land it. The animation strips the hull away and shows the stagger — where each tier sits, how the oar lengths differ, and why the top row needed an outrigger to reach the water at all.
