Tolkien drew jackets for all three volumes himself: a red-pupilled Eye of Sauron ringed by elvish script for The Fellowship, a single red circle drawn around the Ring-inscription for The Two Towers, and a winged white tree under seven stars for The Return of the King. He had already made over a hundred illustrations for The Hobbit. Most of these never reached a shelf in his lifetime, though the Fellowship sigil did make the first editions.
