Thomas Fearnley, the brief Wanderer

An essay on the tiny back-turned figures in a Norwegian Romantic's landscapes

Thomas Fearnley, the brief Wanderer

Thomas Fearnley, born in Norway in 1802, kept putting a small figure with its back to us into his landscapes, often in a distinctive hat or the red cap of his 1830 Landscape with a Wanderer. The essay reads that figure as his alter ego and follows him from Dresden to Amalfi, the Alps and Norway’s fjords, with a painting at each stop. He died at 39, so the run is short.
