A bronze horse balanced on one hoof, six metres up, in the middle of Madrid

Gonzalo Lebrija’s bronze horse touches its 4.4-metre concrete pedestal with one hoof and nothing else, the rest of the animal hanging out over Plaza del Carmen as if it had been paused mid-fall. It went up on 8 July 2026 on a fifteen-year loan from the Thompson hotel across the square, and Madrileños named it “the floating horse” within days. Lebrija says horses in art usually commemorate a military victory and this one commemorates nothing — it is fragility and uncertainty held in balance, which is exactly why half the neighbourhood is arguing about it.
