Eaglehawk Neck is the narrow isthmus that was the only land route off the Tasman Peninsula and its Port Arthur convict settlement. From roughly 1832 to 1877, authorities strung a line of up to 18 chained guard dogs across the hundred-metre neck, close enough to touch but not fight, to stop prisoners from walking free. A bronze dog sculpture marks the spot today.
