A hand-puppet robot vacuum quits its hospital job to find community

Tennis, Oranges

Sean Pecknold’s 11-minute stop-motion short follows a robot vacuum that quits its rounds in a pandemic-era hospital and drifts into a Chinatown street, where two rabbit puppets are stuck in their own repetitive days. The felt puppets, built by art director Emily Franz, are shot with the deeper depth of field and camera moves of live-action rather than typical stop-motion. It premiered at SXSW in 2024, played Annecy and AFI, and won Best Animated Short at the New Hampshire Film Festival — scored with Claude Debussy, not an original soundtrack.
