The name undersells it: this Sha Tin hillside monastery holds nearly 13,000 gilded Buddha statues, not ten thousand, reputedly no two alike. Getting there means climbing 431 steps up the hill from Pai Tau Village, flanked the whole way by life-sized golden arhats in different postures and expressions. Admission is free, the walk from Sha Tin MTR station takes about ten minutes before the climb even starts, and a vegetarian restaurant operates on-site for anyone who makes it up.
