Outside Sydney Hospital on Macquarie Street sits an exact 1:1 bronze copy of Florence’s Il Porcellino, its snout rubbed to a gold shine. Marchesa Clarissa Fiaschi Torrigiani gave it in 1968 to honour her father and brother, both surgeons there. Rub the snout and drop a coin through the grate: the coins are collected for the Sydney Hospital Foundation, which is why staff call the boar “The Silent Volunteer”.
