Splendor Solis

Twenty-two gilded plates arguing that alchemy is a philosophy

Splendor Solis

Splendor Solis is not a recipe for gold. It argues that alchemy is a philosophy of working with nature, and it makes the case in 22 illuminations painted like a book of hours and heightened throughout with gold. A peacock unfurls inside a crowned flask; a three-headed eagle stands in another; a black sun with a face goes down behind a marsh. Yeats, Joyce, Eco and Jung all fell into it.
