Barely 550,000 people live on this island, and almost half its land is protected wilderness, so once you clear Hobart the sky goes properly black — black enough to watch the aurora australis flare green and red behind Cape Bruny Lighthouse or reflect in Cradle Mountain’s Dove Lake. Southern winter, roughly May through August, gives the longest, darkest nights and the best odds of a sighting.
