SOLIDSTATE Hardware

A former Dyson engineer reinvents the side-release buckle

SOLIDSTATE Hardware

The side-release buckle (squeeze the two tabs, the two halves disconnect) hasn’t been seriously redesigned in fifty years. SOLIDSTATE uses a sliding-pawl mechanism instead of flexing plastic tabs — same one-hand operation, but the part that wears out (the elastic tab) is replaced by a machined metal slide that doesn’t fatigue. McClaine left Dyson to build this; Wingback ships them on their bag line.
