The Skirball built its punk semicentennial out of the paper the scene actually left behind — photographs, gig posters, xeroxed flyers, clothing, buttons — across London, New York, DC and LA rather than crowning one city. Punk documented itself in the cheapest materials available, which is exactly why so little of it survived. A museum show is a strange resting place for it, and that is most of the interest.
