Shinzo Tamura Namba Copper M

Osaka sunglasses built around the lens, from a family that has ground them since 1938

Shinzo Tamura Namba Copper M

The frame is a 1950s Wellington in flexible nylon, but the point is the lens: TALEX, the Osaka house Shinzo Tamura’s family has run since his grandfather started grinding lenses in 1938, and which made what it calls the first fully balanced polarized sunglass lens in 1966, using a proprietary iodine-compound filter. The Copper tint is cut for high-speed driving — contrast up, glare down — and the M adds a vacuum-deposited blue mirror that trims light transmission another five percent. $230; six other lens colours in the frame.
