Nobody has repainted it or furnished the rooms in period costume, so the render is falling off the original brick and most of the wood is the wood they laid. Enslaved people lived and worked here for its first century; the halls saw Civil War skirmishes, and Woodrow Wilson’s physician was born in them. Its floor plan is almost exactly the George Wythe House in Williamsburg — look that one up and you have seen the inside.
