A rosery is a garden, or part of one, given over to roses — rose plus -ery, documented since 1745. It shares more than a pronunciation with rosary: that word once meant a rose garden too, because prayers were likened to a garland of roses, and only later did the name slide onto the beads used to count them. A.Word.A.Day’s week is “words you might be tempted to emend”, and this is the week’s best trap.
