Built in 1987 to make America’s Cup traffic stop at the Border Village Roadhouse, Rooey II stands at the edge of the Nullarbor, a few metres inside South Australia, holding a tub of Vegemite. Bill Metherel designed it. The name came out of a public competition that landed on “Rooey” — already the nickname of one of the roadhouse owners, which is how a statue ended up with a sequel number and no original.
