Rocky's Musical Language

Building an alien tongue out of notes, then asking linguists if it holds

Rocky's Musical Language

The filmmakers’ brief was that Rocky should not sound like a person: no consonants, no words, just musical communication. Scientific American took that to linguists and asked the obvious follow-up — could a language made of notes actually carry complex meaning, and could you hold a conversation in it? The answers are more encouraging than you’d guess, and the constraints they name are the interesting part.
