Rex, the Beach Blvd Dinosaur

A 1960s mini-golf dinosaur mascot Jacksonville saved and repainted in 2007

Rex has stood on Beach Boulevard since the 1960s, when he loomed over a hole at Goony Golf, a mini-golf chain that once ran more than 35 courses nationwide, swinging a giant bone to block your putt. When the course closed and redevelopment came for the lot, Jacksonville locals pushed to keep him standing; the new owners obliged, enlisting University of North Florida students to repaint him bright orange in 2007. He’s been glowing red-eyed over the strip-mall parking lot ever since.
