Quote Investigator lands instead on Dick Tuck, the Democratic prankster, who told the Dick Cavett Show in 1969 that he had used the line conceding a California State Senate primary three years earlier. The catch is the good part: no record of it from 1966 survives, and Tuck was a documented fabulist — so he may have invented the concession along with the speech.
