Puerta del Hospital de la Latina

A 1499 Gothic doorway that outlived its hospital, its convent, its street and its neighbourhood

Puerta del Hospital de la Latina

Beatriz Galindo, Latin tutor to Queen Isabella’s children and nicknamed “La Latina”, founded a hospital in Madrid in 1499; the nickname stuck to the hospital and then to the whole neighbourhood. When Calle de Toledo was widened in 1904 the hospital and its convent were demolished and only the doorway was kept — pointed arch, heraldic shields, Saint Joachim embracing Saint Anne — and it sat in municipal storage for decades before being rebuilt in the late 1950s beside the School of Architecture, where students walk past it daily.
