Howard Oakley’s tree series reaches the pine. Signac found his huge umbrella pine by a Saint-Tropez villa belonging to a Monsieur Bonaventure and painted it as The Bonaventure Pine (1893). Cézanne kept returning to lone maritime pines near Aix, and by 1890–95 his constructive stroke had spread to the trunk itself. Théo van Rysselberghe, who was more obsessed than anyone, painted them where they nearly touch the sea.
