Pont de la Bâtiaz

The last wooden covered bridge in Valais still open to cars, beneath a medieval castle

Pont de la Bâtiaz

The Pont de la Bâtiaz is the last wooden covered bridge in Valais still rated for vehicle traffic — a title it’s held since 1829, when the current larch-arched span replaced predecessors repeatedly wrecked by flooding, including the catastrophic 1818 glacier outburst that swept the valley. It crosses the Drance in the shadow of Château de la Bâtiaz, the 13th-century castle that has watched over Martigny’s river crossing for more than 750 years.
