The Payphone at the Edge of the Forest

A trailhead payphone turned into a place to say the goodbyes you never got to

At the Chaney Trail trailhead in Altadena, where cell signal used to give out before the Angeles National Forest began, a payphone still stands — installed for hikers needing an emergency line, kept alive since as the first stop of The Goodbye Line, an art project where strangers dial in to leave the goodbyes they never got to say. It survived 2025’s Eaton Fire with damage; as of this writing, the surrounding trail remains closed for fire recovery.
